Cape Town Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips
Welcome to the Mother City! In this Cape Town travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan an epic South African adventure — featuring the iconic Table Mountain, the cute penguins of Boulders Beach, and the world-class vineyards of Stellenbosch.
Cape Town is a place where nature and culture collide in the most beautiful way. It’s a city tucked between a massive sandstone mountain and the cold Atlantic Ocean, offering everything from high-altitude hikes to white-sand beaches and a food scene that will blow your mind. Whether you're here for the views or the vibrant history, Cape Town is a city that stays with you forever.
I’ve visited Cape Town in 2025, and it is easily one of the most photogenic cities on the planet. There is something about the light here at sunset—locally known as "the golden hour"—that makes everything look like a movie set. It’s a city of adventure, but also a place where you can just sit with a glass of local Pinotage and watch the world go by.
Best Time to Visit Cape Town
The best time to visit Cape Town is during the summer months, from November to March.
- Warm, dry weather (22–28°C / 72–82°F)
- Ideal for beaches and outdoor dining
- Long daylight hours for exploring
If you love wildflowers and whale watching, September to October (Spring) is magical. The landscape is green, the flowers are in bloom at Kirstenbosch, and you can often spot Southern Right Whales along the coast!
Entry Requirements for South Africa
For most travelers in 2026:
- A valid passport (at least 6 months validity)
- New for 2026: South Africa has rolled out an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for many nationalities. Check the official portal before you fly!
- Visa-free entry for up to 90 days for many Western countries (UK, USA, EU, etc.).
Language & Currency
South Africa has 12 official languages, but English is the primary language used in Cape Town.
- Currency: South African Rand (ZAR).
- Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but having some cash for tipping (essential in SA!) is always a good idea.
Getting Around Cape Town
- Uber: Extremely reliable, safe, and affordable. It’s the best way to get around at night.
- MyCiTi Bus: A great daytime rapid transit system that connects the City Bowl to the beaches.
- City Sightseeing (Red Bus): The classic "Hop-On Hop-Off" bus is actually a great way to see the coastal route and reach the Table Mountain cableway.
- Rental Car: Highly recommended if you want to drive the Chapman’s Peak coastal road or visit the Winelands.

Cape Town is a major city, so "street smarts" are a must:
- Avoid walking in isolated areas or quiet city streets after dark—take an Uber instead.
- Keep valuables out of sight when in public.
- Only hike Table Mountain or Lion's Head in groups and during daylight hours.

Cape Town is a city that offers a little bit of everything. It’s a place where you can be on top of a mountain in the morning and at a world-class vineyard by the afternoon. Its beauty is raw and its history is deep.
The culture, the people and the nature make it one of my favourite destinations ever!
