Stockholm Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips
Välkommen to the "Venice of the North!" In this Stockholm travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to explore Sweden’s stunning capital — spread across 14 islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea.
Stockholm is a city that feels both grand and intimate. In 2026, it continues to lead the way in sustainability, fashion, and the tech scene, all while maintaining a deep connection to its maritime roots. Whether you're here to indulge in a traditional "Fika" (coffee break), explore the sprawling Stockholm archipelago, or dance through the night at ABBA The Museum, the city’s clean air and sparkling waterways will win you over.

I’ve spent a couple of days in Stockholm and think it's truly a beautiful city in the northern Europe.
Best Time to Visit Stockholm
The best time to visit Stockholm is during the Summer (June to August) when the city enjoys nearly 20 hours of daylight.
- Summer: Perfect for swimming in the city’s clean waters, outdoor dining, and boat trips. Midsummer in June is a major cultural highlight.
- Spring & Fall (May & Sept): Crisp air and fewer crowds. Beautiful for walking through Djurgården or Södermalm.
- Winter (December): Cold and dark, but incredibly cozy. Stockholm's Christmas markets and "Lucia" processions make it a magical winter destination.
Entry Requirements for Sweden (2026)
For international travelers entering Sweden in 2026:
- ETIAS Requirement: Most non-EU travelers (USA, UK, Canada, etc.) must register with the ETIAS system online before travel.
- Passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
- Cashless Society: Sweden is almost entirely cashless. You will need a contactless card or mobile pay for everything, even small purchases like public toilets or coffee.
Getting Around Stockholm
- SL Public Transport: An integrated system of subways (Tunnelbana), buses, trams, and ferries. The "Tunnelbana" is also known as the world's longest art gallery!
- Walking: Most central attractions are within walking distance, particularly between Gamla stan and the City Center.
- Ferries: Use the local SL ferries to get between islands like Slussen and DjurgĂĄrden—it’s a scenic commute.
- Arlanda Express: The fastest way to get from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm Central Station in 18 minutes.
