How to Get the "Cinema Look" on Sony Cameras

We’ve all been there: you’re standing in a stunning location, the light is hitting the mountains perfectly, but your footage comes back looking like a home video.

The Sony A7C II is my ultimate travel companion, but its 'Auto' mode doesn't do the world justice.

In this post I’m sharing my personal 'secret sauce' settings—from S-Log3 secrets to the 180-degree shutter rule—to help you turn your travel memories into cinematic experiences.

These settings in general are for Sony Cameras.

1. The "Base" Cinematic Setup

  • File Format: XAVC S 4K (This uses the H.264 codec balancing high bitrates, good image quality, and decent editing performance.).

  • Movie Settings: 24p 100M 4:2:2 10-bit. (24p gives you that classic film motion blur).

2. Picture Profile (S-Log3)

The S-Log3 Setup (PP8 or PP9)

Go to your Menu > Exposure/Color > Color Tone > Picture Profile and select an unused slot (usually PP8 or PP9). Set it to the following:

  • Gamma: S-Log3

  • Color Mode: S-Gamut3.Cine (This is much easier to color grade than the standard S-Gamut3).

  • Black Level: 0

  • Black Gamma: Range: Wide, Level: 0

  • Knee: Manual (Point: 100%, Slope: 0)

  • Color Phase: 0

  • Color Depth: (Keep all at 0)

  • Detail: -7 (Sony’s digital sharpening can look "cheap"; turning this down makes the footage look more organic and film-like).

3. Exposure & Motion

  • Mode: Manual (M).

  • Shutter Speed: Use the 180-degree rule. If shooting at 24fps, set your shutter to 1/50. If shooting at 60fps (for slow motion), set it to 1/125.

  • ISO: Use the "Base ISO" for the cleanest image. For S-Log3 on the A7C II, the base ISOs are 800 and 2500. Check your cameras native ISO.

  • Aperture: Keep it as low as your lens allows (e.g., f/1.8 or f/2.8) to get that blurry, cinematic background (bokeh).

3. Focus & Stabilization

  • Focus Mode: AF-C (Continuous AF).

  • AF Transition Speed: Set to 3 or 4. (You want the focus to move smoothly like a human hand, not snap instantly).

  • AF Subj. Shift Sensitivity: Set to Locked On (1 or 2) so the camera doesn't jump to people passing by in the background.

  • SteadyShot: Active. (This adds a slight crop but makes handheld walking shots look much smoother).

4. Advanced "Pro" Tweaks

  • White Balance: Never use Auto. Set it manually (e.g., 5500K for daylight) so the colours don't shift mid-shot.

  • Zebra Display: On. Set to 94 for S-Log3 to ensure you aren't "clipping" your highlights (blowing out the sky).

  • Focus Peaking: On (Level: Low, Color: Red). This helps you see exactly what is in focus.

One Secret Tip:

Since cameras are mostly so light, use a Variable ND Filter on your lens. This acts like "sunglasses" for your camera, allowing you to keep your shutter at 1/50 even in bright sunlight.
