Peru Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips

Welcome to the land of the Incas! In this Peru travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan a bucket-list trip — including the culinary wonders of Lima, the desert oasis of Huacachina, and the legendary Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

Peru is a country of extremes. You can go from world-class surfing on the coast to trekking among 6,000-meter peaks in the Andes in just a few hours. It’s a place where ancient history lives in every stone wall and the food is consistently ranked as the best in the world. Whether you're here for the adventure of a lifetime or a deep dive into culture, Peru never disappoints.

I have explored Peru from the coast to the high sierra on my world travel in 2022. There is something truly spiritual about the Andes that stays with you. From the "Go Slow" vibes of the coast to the breathless heights of Cusco, it is easily one of the most rewarding travel destinations on the planet!

Best Time to Visit Peru

The best time to visit Peru depends on where you’re going, but for the Andes and trekking, May to September is ideal.

  • Dry Season (May–Sept): Sunny days and clear blue skies in the mountains—perfect for Machu Picchu and trekking.
  • Winter in the Andes: Nights can be freezing, but daytime hiking weather is peak.
  • Coast (Dec–March): This is summer in Lima and Paracas—warm, sunny, and great for the beach.

The rainy season in the Andes (December–March) can lead to trail closures (the classic Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance) and muddy conditions, but you’ll find fewer crowds and cheaper prices.

Entry Requirements for Peru

For most international travelers:

  • A valid passport (at least 6 months validity) is required.
  • Visa-free entry for up to 90 days for citizens of the US, UK, Canada, and EU.
  • Make sure to get your entry stamp if arriving by land; if arriving by air, the process is now largely digital in 2026.

Language & Altitude

The official language is Spanish, along with Quechua and Aymara:

  • English is widely spoken in tourist sectors, especially in Cusco and Lima.
  • Altitude Warning: Places like Arequipa and Cusco are very high. Drink plenty of Coca Tea, stay hydrated, and take at least 2 days to acclimatize before any trekking!

Getting Around Peru

Peru is a large country with rugged terrain, so plan your transport wisely:

  • Domestic Flights: LATAM and Sky Airline are great for hopping between Lima, Arequipa, and Cusco.
  • Peru Hop: A popular hop-on, hop-off bus service perfect for the Lima–Paracas–Huacachina–Arequipa route.
  • Luxury Buses: Companies like Cruz del Sur offer "Cama" seats (fully reclining) that are basically first-class on wheels. I took buses between the bigger cities.
  • Trains: PeruRail and Inca Rail are the only ways to get to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) if you aren't trekking.

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

While the Inca Trail is famous, the Salkantay Trek is the true adventurer's choice. It’s more scenic, reaches higher altitudes, and doesn't require booking 6 months in advance.
