Nicaragua Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips

Welcome to the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes!" In this Nicaragua travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan an incredible adventure — featuring the colonial beauty of Granada, the wild energy of León, and the island magic of Ometepe.

Nicaragua is often called the "next Costa Rica," but with a rawer, more affordable, and authentic edge. It’s a country where you can slide down an active volcano in the morning and drink Flor de Caña rum in a colonial plaza by sunset. It’s vibrant, revolutionary, and home to some of the friendliest people in Central America.

I spent a month backpacking through Nicaragua in 2022, and it blew my expectations away. It’s much easier to navigate than you’d think, and the diversity of landscapes—from Pacific surf breaks to twin-volcano islands—is simply mind-blowing. For me it's the better Costa Rica, cheaper and more authentic.

Best Time to Visit Nicaragua

The best time to visit Nicaragua is during the dry season, from November to April.

  • Sunny days and warm temperatures (25–32°C / 77–90°F)
  • Offshore winds on the Pacific coast (perfect for surfing!)
  • Ideal conditions for hiking volcanoes and outdoor exploring

The "green season" (May–October) sees afternoon rain showers, but the dust settles and the countryside turns a brilliant emerald green. September and October are the wettest months and can make some rural roads difficult to pass.

Entry Requirements for Nicaragua

For most travelers:

  • A valid passport (at least 6 months validity)
  • Tourist Card: A $10 USD fee paid in cash upon arrival at the airport or border
  • Visa-Free: Most Western nationalities receive a 90-day stamp (part of the CA-4 agreement)
  • As of 2026, some nationalities may need to use the new online Electronic Visa portal—always check the latest government site before flying!

Language in Nicaragua

The official language is Spanish:

  • English is spoken in tourist hubs like San Juan del Sur, but less so in the north
  • Nicaraguans speak a unique dialect (Nica-Spanish)—learning a few local slang words like "Tuani" (cool) will get you a big smile!

Getting Around Nicaragua

Nicaragua is very budget-friendly to get around:

  • Chicken Buses: The most authentic (and cheapest) way to travel. They go everywhere!
  • Expresso Buses: Faster, micro-bus shuttles between major cities like León and Managua.
  • Ferries: Essential for reaching the island of Ometepe from the port of San Jorge.
  • Private Shuttles: Great for door-to-door service if you’re short on time.

Is Nicaragua Safe?

Nicaragua is generally safe for tourists who stay informed:

  • Avoid political demonstrations and refrain from discussing politics in public
  • Stick to official taxis (look for the red plates)
  • Don't walk alone at night in darker areas of the cities

Nicaragua Highlights & Experiences

León – History & Volcano Boarding

León is gritty, artistic, and full of energy. It’s the best place to learn about Nicaragua's history.

  • Volcano Boarding: Take a day trip to Cerro Negro to slide down an active volcano on a wooden board. It’s terrifyingly fun!
  • Cathedral of León: Pay a few dollars to go up to the roof. It’s all white and offers the best views of the "City of Volcanoes."

Cost of Traveling in Nicaragua

Nicaragua remains one of the cheapest destinations in the Americas:

  • Hostel Dorm: $10–$18 per night
  • Local Meal (Gallo Pinto + Meat): $3–$6
  • Liter of Toña Beer: $2

Tip: Always carry small bills (Córdobas). While USD is accepted in many places, you’ll get a better exchange rate paying in the local currency.

Final Thoughts on Nicaragua Travel

Nicaragua is a country that rewards the curious. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but that’s exactly what makes it special. From the ash of the volcanoes to the salt of the Pacific, it’s a place that feels alive.

If you're looking for an authentic adventure and more affordable than Costa Rica, this is the way to go! For me it's the better version of Costa Rica, less touristy, cheaper and more authentic.
