The Ha Giang Loop: Vietnam’s Most Epic Motorbike Adventure
If you're looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush in Southeast Asia, the Ha Giang Loop is it. Forget the tourist crowds of Ha Long Bay—this is northern
Vietnam at its rawest. Think towering limestone peaks, winding mountain passes, and ethnic villages tucked away in emerald valleys. It is arguably the most beautiful motorbike route in the world.

I've done the Ha Giang Loop on my
World Travel in 2023 when I travelled
Vietnam and it kept one of my favourite adventures ever!

1. Best Time to Travel to Ha Giang
Timing is everything when you're riding through mountain passes at high altitudes:
- September to November (The Golden Season):
This is peak season. The rice terraces turn brilliant gold just before harvest, and the weather is cool and dry—perfect for riding.
- March to May (Spring):
The landscape is lush and green, and flowers are in bloom. Visibility is generally good for those epic valley views.
The Rainy Season (June to August): Use caution. While the mountains are vibrant green, landslides are common and the roads can become extremely slippery and dangerous. So for the Ha Giang Loop I would really recommend not going in rainy season. It is way more difficult to drive, the views are worse and it can be quite dangerous.

2. How to Get There (Hanoi to Ha Giang)
Most travelers start their journey in Hanoi. Since there are no trains or airports in Ha Giang, your options are limited to the road:
By Sleeper Bus
This is the most popular option. Buses leave Hanoi daily (and nightly). The journey takes about 6–7 hours. I recommend booking a "Cabin Bus" for more comfort so you arrive in Ha Giang city well-rested and ready to ride.
I booked my sleeper bus through Hanoi Buffalo Hostel. We got picked up in the evening around 9pm and arrived in Ha Giang in the morning at 5am. We were able to sleep on that bus. The prices are around $30 for the sleeper bus.

By Private Van
If you are traveling in a group, a private limousine van is faster and more comfortable, dropping you off directly at your hostel in Ha Giang.
3. The Tour: 3 Days & 2 Nights on the Loop
While you can do the loop in 3, 4 or 5 days, I would definitely recommend to do the tour minimum 4 days / 3 nights. The longer, the better and you are not rushed throughout the tour and can experience the Loop more slowly.
It gives you shorter riding days, meaning more time for photo stops, coffee breaks, and actually soaking in the views instead of just rushing to the next hostel.

Day 1: Ha Giang to Yen Minh
The adventure kicks off with the climb up to "Heaven’s Gate" pass. You'll stop at the Quan Ba viewpoint to see the famous "Twin Mountains" before winding down through pine forests toward Yen Minh. It’s the perfect first day to get used to the mountain roads.

Day 2: Yen Minh to Dong Van
Today you head deep into the UNESCO Geopark. You'll navigate the legendary "Nine-Turn Pass" and can visit the historic Hmong King’s Palace. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and rocky as you reach the northernmost town of Dong Van, right on the border with China.

Day 3: Ma Pi Leng Pass to Du Gia
The absolute highlight of the trip. You will ride across the Ma Pi Leng Pass—often called the most beautiful road in Southeast Asia. After taking in the views of the turquoise Nho Que river far below, you’ll head south to the magical village of Du Gia. This is a longer riding day, but ending it with a dinner at a homestay surrounded by rice paddies is worth it.

Day 4: Du Gia back to Ha Giang
Enjoy a relaxed morning at the Du Gia waterfall for a refreshing swim. The final stretch back to Ha Giang takes you through some of the steepest and most lush mountain scenery on the entire loop. You'll arrive back in the city in the late afternoon, perfectly timed to catch your sleeper bus back to Hanoi.

4. Where to Book the Tour
You have two main ways to experience the loop:
Easy Rider:
If you aren't an experienced motorbike rider, book an "Easy Rider" tour. You sit on the back of the bike while a professional local driver handles the dangerous roads. This allows you to actually look at the scenery instead of the pavement!
Self-Ride:
You can rent a semi-automatic or manual bike from famous hostels like Mama’s House, Jasmine Hostel or Bong Hostel. Make sure you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) and travel insurance that covers motorcycling!
I did the tour myself with a self-ride. It was awesome to drive by yourself through all the mountains. But I would really just recommend it when you feel comfortable driving. It is still a very dangerous adventure and there is traffic!

Bong Hostel
You can book the tour with different hostels and tour companies. I booked it with Bong Hostel and it was amazing. The groups are a little smaller than e.g. with Jasmine Hostel (Party Hostel). We were 15 in the group and the pace how fast you are driving is a bit slower than Jasmine.
You can book the tour online on their website:
Bong Hostel. (This is no advertising, just because of my own personal amazing experience). The price is currently around $170 for the 4 days / 3 nights tour.

5. Final Thoughts
The Ha Giang Loop was the highlight of my time in Vietnam. It’s physically demanding and the weather can change in seconds, but the hospitality of the local ethnic communities and the sheer scale of the mountains are worth the effort. Pack light, bring a raincoat, and don't forget your camera!

| Dinner in the Home Stays |
When your staying in the homestays with your hostel group you gonna have karaoke nights and drink a lot of happy water (Vietnamese local brewed liquor). It was so much fun. Adventure and driving during the day, party and karaoke during night with the locals and guides.
