Indonesia Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips
Selamat Datang! Welcome to the largest archipelago in the world. In this Indonesia travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan a legendary trip — from the spiritual heart of Bali to the rugged beauty of Lombok and the once-in-a-lifetime boat expedition to Komodo.
Indonesia is more than just a destination; it’s an adventure of epic proportions. With over 17,000 islands, you can spend one day surfing world-class waves and the next swimming with prehistoric dragons or gentle whale sharks. It’s a land of volcanic peaks, turquoise craters, and the warmest hospitality in Southeast Asia.
I have explored Indonesia on my world travel in 2023. While Bali is the famous starting point, the real magic happens when you head east. The boat trip from Lombok to Flores is, without a doubt, one of the most viral and rewarding travel experiences you can have in 2026!

Best Time to Visit Indonesia
The best time to visit Bali, Lombok, and Komodo is during the dry season, from April to October.
- April – June: The "Sweet Spot." Lush green landscapes, clear skies, and fewer crowds.
- July – August: Peak season. Perfect weather but very busy and higher prices.
- September – October: Great for diving and snorkeling with the best water visibility.
The rainy season (November–March) brings high humidity and frequent tropical downpours. Note that during heavy seas in January and February, some boat tours between Lombok and Flores may be cancelled for safety.
Entry Requirements for Indonesia (2026)
For most travelers:
- A valid passport (at least 6 months validity) is essential.
- e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival): Apply online before you land (approx. 500,000 IDR / $35) for a 30-day stay.
- Bali Tourist Levy: As of 2024, all international tourists entering Bali must pay a fee of 150,000 IDR (approx. $10).
- Customs Declaration: Fill out the electronic customs form (ECD) online 48 hours before arrival to save time at the airport.
Getting Around
- Scooters: The ultimate way to see Bali and Lombok ($5–$10 per day). Always wear a helmet!
- Gojek / Grab: Essential apps for cheap bike taxis and food delivery.
- Fast Boats: The primary way to get between Bali, the Gili Islands, and Lombok.
- Domestic Flights: Use Lion Air or AirAsia to fly back from Labuan Bajo (Flores) to Bali after your boat tour.

Indonesia Highlights & Experiences
Bali – Culture & Caffeine
Bali is the perfect place to acclimatize. Don't just stay in one spot! But remember that Bali is also very crowded and touristy, the traffic can be a big pain.

Ubud
- Ubud: Walk the rice terraces of Tegallalang and visit the Monkey Forest.
- Uluwatu: Watch the sunset at the cliffside temple and see the Kecak Fire Dance.

Lombok – The Natural Beauty
Lombok is quieter than Bali and feels like Bali did 20 years ago. It’s the starting point for your boat adventure. You can just take a ferry from Bali to Lombok.

Lombok
- Kuta Lombok: The base for the best beaches like Mawun and Selong Belanak.
- Mount Rinjani: If you're fit, do the 2-3 day trek to the crater rim of this massive volcano.
- Gili Islands: Just off the coast, these three tiny islands have no cars—only bicycles and turtles!

The 4-Day Boat Tour: Lombok to Flores

Komodo Island
This is the ultimate highlight. You’ll live on a boat for 4 days and 3 nights, sleeping under the stars or in a small cabin. It is a social, raw, and incredible experience. We did it with the company Kareem The Explorer and it was a very basic fantastic experience!

Komodo Dragon
- Swim with Whale Sharks: Usually on Day 2, the boat stops in Saleh Bay (Sumbawa) at sunrise. Swimming next to these gentle giants is a spiritual experience.
- Padar Island: Hike to the top for the famous view of the three colored beaches (black, white, and pink).
- Komodo Island: See the world's largest lizards—the Komodo Dragons—in their natural habitat.
- Pink Beach: Relax on sand that actually looks pink due to red coral fragments!
- Manta Point: Drift in the current and watch giant Manta Rays glide beneath you.

Labuan Bajo – The Ending Point
Your boat trip ends here on the island of Flores. It’s a bustling port town with great sunset bars. Honestly such a beautiful place. We wished we had more time there to stay.

Lebuan Bajo
- Celebrate the end of your trip at a rooftop bar like "Loccal Collection."
- Fly back to Bali (only 1 hour) to catch your international flight.
Cost of Traveling in Indonesia

- Local Meal (Nasi Campur): $2–$5

Indonesia is a country that rewards those who venture off the beaten path. While Bali is beautiful, the real adventure lies in the wild waters of the east. Jumping off a boat into the middle of the ocean to swim with whale sharks is something you will talk about for the rest of your life.
