Thailand Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips

Welcome to the land of smiles! In this Thailand travel guide, you’ll discover everything you need to plan an unforgettable trip — including the best Thailand highlights, travel tips, and a complete itinerary.

Thailand, located in Southeast Asia, is famous for its tropical beaches, stunning temples, vibrant cities, and incredible food. Whether you’re exploring Bangkok, visiting elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai, or relaxing on paradise islands, Thailand offers something for every traveler.

I have been to Thailand twice. Once on a regular vacation and second time on my world travel in 2023 for one and a half months. Thailand is one of my favourite countries in the world and is so much fun!

Best Time to Visit Thailand

The best time to visit Thailand is between November and March, when the weather is dry and temperatures are more comfortable.

  • Warm temperatures (25–32°C / 77–90°F)
  • Low humidity
  • Ideal for beaches and sightseeing

The rainy season (May–October) brings fewer tourists and lower prices, but also frequent showers. First time I've been to Thailand was actually during rainy season. Mostly there are short intense rain showers. Overall it didn't rain too much and we still had an amazing time there.

Entry Requirements for Thailand

For most travelers:

  • A valid passport is required
  • Visa-free entry for up to 30 days (depending on nationality)
  • Proof of onward travel may be required

Language in Thailand

The official language is Thai, but:

  • English is widely spoken in tourist areas
  • Learning basic Thai phrases is helpful and you can connect to locals

Getting Around Thailand

Thailand offers many transportation options:

  • Domestic flights: Fast and affordable for long distances
  • Trains: Scenic and comfortable
  • Buses: Cheap and reliable
  • Ferries: Essential for island hopping
  • TukTuk: In the cities like Bangkok it's common to take TukTuks
  • Shuttle Services: In all cities there are tourism shops which offer shuttle services to different destinations

Is Thailand Safe?

Thailand is generally a safe destination, but keep these tips in mind:

  • Avoid scams in tourist areas
  • Be cautious with valuables
  • Respect local customs and culture

  • Koh Lanta – more quite, beautiful island
  • Khao Sok Nationalpark – sleep in a floating bungalow in the nationalpark

Thailand Highlights & Experiences

Bangkok – The Vibrant Capital

Bangkok
Bangkok

Bangkok is a must-see in every Thailand travel guide:
  • Grand Palace and temples
  • Street food markets
  • Rooftop bars and nightlife

Chiang Mai & Pai – the beautiful spots in the north

Elephant Sanctuary Camp Chiang Mai
Elephant Sanctuary Camp Chiang Mai

From Bangkok you can take a sleeper train to Chiang Mai, very cool experience!
  • Visit one of the elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai
The real diamond in the north is Pai. Another 3 hours from Chiang Mai by a shuttle Service. I would spend more time in Pai than Chiang Mai.

Pai Canyon
Pai Canyon
  • Tipsy Tubing (a big party with floating donuts on a river) was definitely a highlight
  • Visit the Canyon in Pai
  • Rent a scooter and see the nature around Pai

Ao Nang – beautiful beaches and rock formations

Railey Beach Ao Nang
Railey Beach Ao Nang

From Chiang Mai or Bangkok you can fly to Krabi and go to Ao Nang with a shuttle transfer from there. Krabi is very touristic and not really worth it. The real beauty is Ao Nang.
  • Visit Railey Beach in Ao Nang
  • Hang out by the beaches
  • Make a pub crawl tour

Koh Phi Phi – the beautiful party island

Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi

From Krabi you can take the ferry to Koh Phi Phi. Koh Phi Phi is a really small beautiful island, but mostly covered by hotels, restaurants and bars. You can walk everywhere.
  • Go out at the main beaches. There are a lot of bars and restaurants where you can see the sunset.
  • Book a boat tour to Maya Bay, the famous beach from the movies
  • Check out "Long Beach" and "Loh Moo Dee Beach", two beautiful beaches more outside the busy areas

Koh Lanta – quite beaches and relaxation

Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta

You can take the ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta or go there from Krabi. It's a bigger island and not that crowded. You can rent a scooter and explore the island. Perfect for some relaxed days!
  • Most people stay close to Long Beach
  • Rent a scooter and go explore

Khao Sok Nationalpark – once in a lifetime experience

Khao Sok Nationalpark
Khao Sok Nationalpark

When you want to visit Khao Sok Nationalpark here's the way to do it: book a shuttle to Khao Sok Town. You can sleep there one night and you gonna book one or two nights in a floating bungalow in one of the restaurants in Khao Sok Town.

Next morning you gonna be picked up around 9am, you will be transfered to one of the floating bungalows accomodations and you gonna do some boat tours in the nationalpark. You can see elephants and monkeys. You can also rent a kayak. It's an incredible experience and a Must Do when in Thailand!

Koh Samui – Luxury & Relaxation

Koh Samui
Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of the most popular Thailand highlights with stunning beaches, resorts, and palm trees. It's one of the more touristy islands and more crowded. But also perfect to rent a scooter and go explore.

Koh Phangan – Beaches & Parties

Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan

Known for the famous Full Moon Party, but also offers quiet beaches and nature. It's smaller than Koh Samui and less touristy. Again rent a scooter and go explore!

Koh Tao – Diving Paradise

Koh Tao
Koh Tao

Perfect for snorkeling and diving, Koh Tao is one of the best underwater destinations in Thailand. I did my open water diving license over there. A diving school I can highly recommend is Koh Tao Scubaclub.

Cost of Traveling in Thailand

Thailand is a very affordable destination:

  • Accommodation: $10–$100 per night
  • Meals: $2–$15
  • Transport: very budget-friendly

Tip: Street food is not only cheap but also some of the best food you’ll find.
