Miami Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips

Welcome to the Magic City! In this Miami travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to navigate the neon lights, turquoise waters, and Latin soul of Florida's most iconic destination — from the glitz of South Beach to the wild Everglades.

Miami is a city that feels like a different country altogether. It’s where high-end luxury meets gritty street art, and where the air smells like a mix of salt water and Cuban coffee. Whether you're here to party until sunrise, explore world-class galleries, or escape into the mangroves, Miami delivers a high-energy experience.

I've visited Miami in 2022 on my world travel for a couple of days. The beaches in Miami make it worth the visit.

Best Time to Visit Miami

The best time to visit Miami is during the "winter" and spring, from November to April.

  • The Weather: Expect temperatures between 20°C and 27°C (68°F–80°F) with low humidity and clear skies.
  • Events: This is peak season for events like Art Basel (December), Ultra Music Festival (March), and the Miami Open.

Hurricane season runs from June to November. While summer is much cheaper, it is incredibly hot and humid with daily tropical thunderstorms. If you can handle the heat, you'll find great deals on luxury hotels!

Entry Requirements for Miami (USA)

For international travelers entering the United States in 2026:

  • ESTA: Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries must apply for an ESTA online at least 72 hours before travel.
  • Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your period of stay.
  • Digital Declaration: Use the "MPC" (Mobile Passport Control) app to speed up your entry through customs at MIA airport.

Getting Around Miami

  • Uber/Lyft: The most convenient way to get around, especially between Miami Beach and the mainland.
  • The Metromover: A free, automated train that loops around Downtown and Brickell—great for skyline views!
  • Brightline: A high-speed train that connects Miami to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando.
  • Trolleys: Free trolleys run in neighborhoods like Coral Gables, Miami Beach, and Wynwood.

Is Miami Safe?

Miami is generally safe for tourists, but like any major city:

  • Stick to well-lit, populated areas at night.
  • Be mindful of your belongings on crowded beaches like South Beach.
  • Avoid walking alone in certain parts of Downtown or Overtown late at night.

Cost of Traveling in Miami

Miami is one of the more expensive cities in the US, so budget accordingly:

  • Hostel Dorm: $40–$60 / Mid-range Hotel: $200–$350
  • Quick Lunch (Sandwich/Tacos): $15–$20
  • Cocktail at a Rooftop Bar: $18–$25

Final Thoughts on Miami

Miami is a city of contrasts. It’s loud, it’s proud, and it’s undeniably beautiful. I have to say it wasn't one of my favourite cities because of the cultural aspect. But when you are there you can have a good time by the beaches.
