Panama Travel Guide: Highlights, Itinerary & Travel Tips

Welcome to Panama! In this Panama travel guide, you’ll find everything you need to navigate this Central American gem — from the colonial charm of Casco Viejo to the pristine white sands of the San Blas Islands and the misty cloud forests of El Valle de Antón.

Panama is a land of incredible contrasts. As a global logistics hub, it boasts a glittering skyscraper skyline in Panama City that rivals Miami, yet a short boat ride takes you to indigenous territories and untouched tropical rainforests.

In 2026, the country has become a top destination for eco-tourism and digital nomads alike. Whether you are surfing the Caribbean breaks of Bocas del Toro or transiting the iconic Panama Canal, you’ll discover a nation that is far more than just a bridge between two continents.

I've been to Panama on my World Travel in 2022 and the country can be perfectly combined with Costa Rica.

Best Time to Visit Panama

The best time to visit Panama is during the dry season (December–April), also known as "Verano."

  • Dry Season (December–April): Expect clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine. This is the peak time for hiking in Boquete and island hopping in San Blas.
  • Shoulder Season (May & November): These months transition between seasons. You'll find lower prices and fewer crowds, though tropical rain showers become more frequent.
  • Rainy Season (June–October): Also called the "Green Season." Expect heavy afternoon downpours, but the landscapes are incredibly lush. It’s the best time for white-water rafting and seeing whales on the Pacific coast.
  • Surfing Season: For the best Caribbean swells in Bocas del Toro, aim for December through March.

Entry Requirements for Panama (2026)

For international travelers in 2026:

  • Electronic Declaration: Most travelers must complete the Digital Affidavit of Health/Arrival via the official portal before boarding their flight to Tocumen International (PTY).
  • Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months (6 months is recommended) beyond your date of entry.
  • Proof of Onward Travel: You may be asked to show a return ticket or a ticket to your next destination.
  • Solvency: Travelers may be asked to prove they have at least $500 USD in cash or bank statements for their stay (though this is rarely checked for major tourist arrivals).

Getting Around Panama

  • Domestic Flights: Use Air Panama for quick hops from Panama City (Albrook Airport) to Bocas del Toro or David.
  • Uber & Metro: In Panama City, Uber is very reliable and affordable. The Panama Metro is the only subway system in Central America and is incredibly clean and efficient.
  • Buses: The "Chicken Buses" are being phased out for modern "MetroBuses" in the city, but for long-distance travel, the large coaches from Albrook Terminal are comfortable and cheap.
  • Water Taxis: In Bocas del Toro and San Blas, boats (lanchas) are your primary mode of transport. Always negotiate the price before boarding.

Is Panama Safe?

Panama is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Latin America, but standard precautions apply:

  • Panama City: Neighborhoods like Casco Viejo and Bella Vista are very safe. However, avoid wandering into the neighboring district of El Chorrillo or Curundu, especially at night.
  • San Blas: Very safe, as the islands are strictly managed by the Guna Yala community.
  • Nature Safety: When hiking in El Valle or Boquete, stay on marked trails. The tropical jungle can be disorienting, and weather changes quickly.
  • Safety Rating: Very high for tourists, but always keep an eye on your belongings in crowded terminals or busy beaches.

Panama Experiences You Can't Miss

Island Hopping in San Blas

San Blas Islands
San Blas Islands

There is no experience like waking up on a tiny island with nothing but palm trees.

  • Pro Tip: Book a multi-day sailing trip to reach the "Outer Cays" where the water is the clearest and the crowds are non-existent.
  •

The Views from India Dormida

In El Valle de Antón, this hike offers a legendary view of the volcanic crater town below. The silhouette of the mountain looks like a "Sleeping Indian" girl, and the photography at dawn is spectacular.

Dining in Casco Viejo in Panama City

The rooftop bar scene in Casco is world-class. Sip a cocktail at Selina or Tantalo while watching the sun set over the modern skyline across the bay.

Bocas Town Nightlife & Nature

Rent a bicycle in Bocas and ride to Playa Bluff. The contrast between the vibrant party energy of the town and the raw, crashing waves of the coastline is incredible.

Final Thoughts on Panama

Panama is a destination that offers the best of both worlds. You can have a high-end luxury experience in the city and be in a remote indigenous village by lunchtime. It is a land of transit, history, and incredible biodiversity.

Whether you are there for the photography, the adventure, or just to escape to the islands, Panama in 2026 feels like a country that has finally found its rhythm.
